First documented by Charles E. Brown (founder of the Wisconsin Archaeological Society and museum director at the State Historical Society.) in his 1942 pamphlet on Wisconsin Sea Serpents entitled, “Sea Serpents: Wisconsin Occurrences of these Weird Water Monsters in the Four Lakes, Rock, Red Cedar, Koshkonong, Geneva, Elkhart, Michigan, and Other Lakes”, the Lake Waubesa Monster is said to have made its first “official” appearance in the early 1920’s.

Cryptid Profile: Philip H. Gosse's White-Flippered Whale

September 26, 2018  /  adam benedict

During this time, Gosse stated that the herd of unknown animals continued to steadily follow the ship as it made its way under the stars. Amazed by what he was seeing, the naturalist watched as the large creatures raised their heads from below the surface and dove back down exposing large backs and small dorsal fins. Some would spin through the water and even others would swim on their backs entirely, thus exposing a pure white belly that shown brightly beneath the moonlight.

In June of 2006, an anonymous reward of $10,000 was made public to anyone who could offer legitimate information and proof of the existence of a specific bird either by its nest, roost, or feeding site. In December of 2008, a larger $50,000 reward was offered to anyone who could lead a biologist to a living specimen of this same bird. What exact bird were these rewards offered in exchange for proof of? One of the most impressive and largest woodpeckers known to exist in modern times, the Ivory Billed Woodpecker.

Cryptid Profile: The Avalanche Sea Serpent Encounter

But scattered among the massive amount of possible fake/mistaken sightings and encounters are the ones that may be real. The rare ones where the witnesses are backed up by other witnesses who are also backed up by more witnesses. The kind where the details of the encounter and the description of the creature (or creatures) were written down and recorded in an official setting. The kind of reports where those who raised their hand and swore to them would have no real reason to lie or deceive the public.

Cryptid Profile: Parker's Snake

The villagers were said to have scrambled to catch the snake in order to kill it, but it was too late, the unknown creature was gone and would not be seen in the area again. While they weren't able to capture it, they did manage to get a somewhat decent look at the animal. Sadly though, they were never able to identify it, even after describing it to Parker, a snake expert.

Sighting 1: This sighting took place in the late 1970’s early 1980’s in an unnamed Wisconsin city. The witness reports that one day while doing farm work with his sisters, he noticed a strange looking creature flying in the sky above him. The witness claimed that while driving a tractor to move some crates of vegetables, a creature that resembled something from the age of the dinosaurs flew overhead. The creature possessed a long pointed head, oddly curved wings, a dark body color, and a long tail with a ball-like shape on the end. The witness tried explaining to his siblings what he saw, but they did not believe him. The creature was never seen again.

Cryptid Profile: The Wisconsin Yeti (AKA: The Deltox Marsh Monster)

August 19, 2018  /  adam benedict

As the beast got unknowingly closer to the men, the pair started to become aware of its presence. Thinking that a bear was possibly approaching, the men ducked low behind some shrubs in order to let it pass. But when it did, they quickly realized it wasn’t a bear. Both men later stated that what they first thought was a simple, every day creature of the woods, was actually something they couldn’t fully explain. The thing seemed to move like a man, but had an overall appearance like an ape. It looked almost like a perfect blend of both man and animal.

Cryptid Profile: The Lake Koshkonong Monster

koshkon.jpg

For nearly 136 years, since the first lake monster sighting in 1882 until now, people have continued to see unknown creatures within bodies of water throughout the badger state. It was once even said that there has been a monster sighted in almost every lake and river throughout the entire state. That’s a lot of history for a type of creature thought not to exist.

Cryptid Profile: The Wolf Deer

August 19, 2018  /  adam benedict

wolf deer.jpg

First reported in 1951 by a woman named Mrs. Laub, the Wolf Deer is described as standing roughly the size of a grey wolf and weighing between 50-60lbs. The creature is said to have possessed four extremely thin deer-like legs with very large foot pads, and had a body that appeared to be built like a canine. The head, which looked quite deer-like in terms of shape and size, had small pointed ears sitting upon it. The fur on the body was thought to be reddish-brown in color, while the fur on the tail was extremely bushy and black in color. Mrs. Laub described the tail as being very horse-like in appearance and slightly to large for the creatures body.

Cryptid Profile: The Thunder Horse

August 19, 2018  /  adam benedict

When it comes to cryptozoology, everyone has their own personal opinion on what is considered a cryptid and what is not. Some believe the creature in question has to be monstrous in size, terrifying in appearance, and have had numerous sightings and encounters before it can be considered a true cryptid. Others feel that real cryptids are elusive animals that skirt the border between the real and the supernatural, the creatures that never seem to age and are responsible for the same kinds of sightings for well over 100yrs (we’re looking at you Nessie). But then there are the realists, the ones who feel that a cryptid is simply a creature that hasn’t been fully categorized by science and has found itself in the middle of a mystery trying to figure out what it is.
