Cryptid Profile: Ashuaps

Sightings of a long, bluish-black serpent-like creature that is able to lift itself nearly 3ft above the water was first officially reported in Lac Saint-Jean in the 1950’s. Though the Aboriginal Canadians that lived within in the area prior to the arrival of European settlers long knew about the creature and claimed that its lair was located on Grass Snake Island, a small island within the lake.

Cryptid Profile: Chinese Giant Toads

From within the mountain pools, three extremely large and unsightly creatures that resembled giant toads, rose up from beneath the water and started swimming towards the waters edge. The same edge where the scientists were currently setting up their recording equipment.

Cryptid Profile: Yellow-Belly Sea Monsters

On September the 11th of 1876, two men by the names of Captain John K. Webster and James Anderson (a surgeon) were on a steamer ship known as the Nestor, when they witnessed a huge, unknown creature undulating through the waters of the Strait of Malacca (located off the coast of Malaysia).  The men watched the creature move around the steamer ship for nearly thirty minutes and documented its appearance before it swam out of sight.

Cryptid Profile: The Afanc

Since the 15th-century, monstrous creatures resembling a cross between a crocodile, a dragon, and a beaver have been said to dwell within lakes all throughout Wales. They were known to devour anybody foolish enough to swim within their waters and that the thrashing of ones tail could cause massive flooding to areas surrounding the lake in which it was inhabiting.

Cryptid Profile: Beebe’s White-Banded Manta

On April 27th, 1923, American naturalist William Beebe was aboard his yacht, the Norma, near Tower Island in the Galapagos Islands when he collided with something unusual. As Beebe ran to the side of his vessel to get a look at what the Norma had hit, his eyes caught sight of large manta ray swimming off, away from the boat and back out to see. Beebe quickly noted the appearance and characteristics of the mystery manta as it swam away and would later speak about the encounter in his 1924 book, “Galapagos, World’s End”.

Cryptid Profile: Rocky (The Rock Lake Terror)

The Rock Lake Monster, who would later became known as Rocky, was first spotted in the lake in 1867. A man by the name of Harbeck claimed to have seen a large lizard swimming in the lake, and at one point, he said to have encountered it on land. Harbeck stated that the serpent was hidden within large reeds and vegetation along the shore and as he walked by (he must have startled it), the creatures head rose up, it hissed at him, and it quickly made its way back into the water.

Cryptid Profile: The Hawkesbury River Monster

The Hawkesbury River Monster is said to be between 25-35ft long, has a large bulky body that is covered in patchy black and gray skin, a long neck that is topped off by a head shaped like an oversized football, four large flippers, and a thick tail that becomes skinnier the farther away from the body it stretches.

While hunting in the Kamchatka Peninsula in 1987, Russian hunter Rodion Sivolobov was given something quite unusual and rarely seen, the giant white skin of an unknown bear. It was after receiving this unknown skin that Sivolobov spent the next decade researching what the locals called, the Irkuiem.

Cryptid Profile: The Kurrea

In New South Wales, Australia, approximately 12 miles from Queensland, there is a body of water known as Boobera Lagoon. This freshwater lake stretches over 4 miles long, is regarded as a culturally significant site (due to ceremonies once held by the Bigambul and Kamilaroi people), and is said to be the home of a water dragon.
