“Rare Woodpecker Found In Florida; To Be Protected”

NEW YORK, Oct. 3. – The discovery in Florida of living ivory-billed woodpeckers, America’s rarest birds, and the establishment of a sanctuary for them was announced yesterday by the National Audubon Society.

Two of the birds were seen last winter in Northwestern Florida by Whitney H. Eastman, a Minneapolis business executive and member of the society who led an expedition to find them. It is believed however that more of them are in the area.

An application for establishment of the 1,300-acre preserve in the Apalachicola River country of Florida was approved today by the Florida Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission.

“Historic Cryptid Headlines” showcases actual articles involving cryptids that were published within United States newspapers back in the 1800’s-1900’s. The articles posted here are written exactly as they appeared during their original publishing date.
