Historic Oddity Headline: April 14, 1942 - Family Wonders What They Saw In The Sky

“Family Wonders What They Saw In The Sky.”

An object in the sky last night viewed by the nine members of the William C. Monroe family, which lives at 295 Pearl street, has Mr. and Mrs. Monroe and their children wondering as to its origin.

The object, said to be clearly visible at 8:45 o’clock, was snake-like in proportions and moved from east to west disappearing from view before the attention of any other people could be called to it. Others may have seen it also, but only the one report was received in this office.

Members of the Monroe family had gone for an evening ride and upon their return home sighted the object in the sky. It was said to be equal in length to about several lots.

There was some conjecture among the Monroes who thought, at first, it might have been caused by an airplane but there was no noise of a motor nor could any aircraft be seen. Members of the family agreed that it wasn’t a cloud, but they could not figure out just what it was that they had seen and wondered today if anyone else had a better view of the object.

“Historic Oddity Headlines” showcases actual articles written about truly odd occurrences that took place and were published within United States newspapers back in the 1800s-1900s. The articles posted here are written exactly as they appeared during their original publishing date.
